Why Alcohol?
Most adolescents and even adults are unaware of the risks youth take when they engage in alcohol and drug use.

  • Alcohol kills 6 1/2 times more young people than all other illegal drugs combined. (Source: Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation)
  • Youth who drink alcohol are 7 1/2 times more likely to use any illicit drug, more than 22 times more likely to use marijuana, and 50 times more likely to use cocaine than youth who never drank. (Source: Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse)
  • Use of alcohol is associated with most other drug use and is highly correlated with violence, fighting, negative attitudes, academic failure and poor health practices. (Source: Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation)
  • In more than half of all homicides, the perpetrator, the victim or both have been drinking. (Source: "Alcohol Alert", National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, No. 38, October 1997)
